Mary Berry’s Soda Bread

A quick and easy homemade soda bread recipe that relies on baking soda and buttermilk for a soft texture and crisp crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g (4 cups) plain flour or wholemeal flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 400ml (1¾ cups) buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan)/Gas 6. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift the flour, salt, and baking soda together.
  3. Gradually pour in the buttermilk, mixing with a wooden spoon until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.
  5. Place the dough onto the baking tray and score a deep cross on top with a sharp knife.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  7. Allow the soda bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use fresh baking soda for the best rise and handle the dough gently to avoid a dense loaf.
