Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 oz blackstrap molasses soda (or dark cola with molasses syrup) to mimic dark rum
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz grenadine
  • Dash aromatic bitters (optional) non-alcoholic bitters also available
  • Ice
  • Pineapple wedge or maraschino cherry for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. In a cocktail shaker, combine pineapple juice, orange juice, lime juice, and bitters (if using). Add ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds.
  2. Take a tall glass or hurricane glass and fill it with fresh ice cubes.
  3. Strain the juice mix into the prepared glass.
  4. Slowly pour the blackstrap soda (or dark cola with molasses) over the back of a spoon into the glass.
  5. Carefully pour the grenadine down the inside of the glass. It will sink, creating a gorgeous sunset-to-storm gradient.
  6. Add a pineapple wedge or cherry for garnish.

Notes

Want a fizzier version? Replace the juice with flavored sparkling water. Make a party batch: Multiply ingredients by 4 and serve in a large pitcher over ice. Use smoked tea concentrate or cola + molasses + dash of vanilla to deepen the flavor if soda alternatives aren’t available.
