Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce Adds sweetness and umami.
  • 2 tablespoons five-spice powder For aromatic flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons honey To sweeten and help with caramelization.
  • 1 cube red fermented bean curd Optional, for authentic flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce For added umami.
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine Enhances the marinade flavor.
For the Beef
  • 2 pounds boneless short ribs or beef brisket Choose cuts with good marbling for tenderness.

Method

Marinating the Beef
  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, five-spice powder, honey, fermented bean curd (if using), soy sauce, and Shaoxing wine.
  2. Add the beef to the marinade, ensuring it's fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best flavor.
Cooking the Beef
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the marinated beef on a wire rack set over a foil-lined baking tray.
  3. Roast the beef in the oven for 20-25 minutes until cooked through.
  4. Switch to the broiler setting and broil for an additional 5-10 minutes to achieve a charred exterior.
  5. Baste the beef with the honey glaze mixture every 10 minutes during broiling.
Resting and Slicing
  1. Remove the beef from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.
  2. Slice against the grain to ensure tender pieces and serve with reserved marinade.

Notes

Pair with an Asian cucumber salad and steamed jasmine rice to balance the richness of the BBQ beef. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
