Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until a dough forms.
- Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes.
Baking
- Roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured surface.
- Cut into flower shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are slightly golden.
- Allow to cool completely before decorating.
Decorating
- To prepare the royal icing, beat together the powdered sugar, egg white, and vanilla until you achieve a stiff consistency.
- Divide icing into bowls and color with food coloring or natural dyes as desired.
- Use stiff icing for outlining and thinner icing for flooding the cookies.
- Allow the icing to dry completely, preferably overnight.
Notes
Store the cookies in airtight containers, layering them with parchment paper to keep the decorations intact. For longer-term storage, freeze the cookies before decorating.
