Ingredients
  

For the Cookie Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Should be cool to the touch.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour Weigh for best results.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
For the Royal Icing
  • 2 cups powdered sugar Sifted.
  • 1 large egg white or meringue powder equivalent For stability.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Coloring
  • As needed food coloring or natural dyes (matcha, turmeric, beet juice) To create vibrant colors.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until a dough forms.
  6. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured surface.
  2. Cut into flower shapes using cookie cutters.
  3. Place cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are slightly golden.
  5. Allow to cool completely before decorating.
Decorating
  1. To prepare the royal icing, beat together the powdered sugar, egg white, and vanilla until you achieve a stiff consistency.
  2. Divide icing into bowls and color with food coloring or natural dyes as desired.
  3. Use stiff icing for outlining and thinner icing for flooding the cookies.
  4. Allow the icing to dry completely, preferably overnight.

Notes

Store the cookies in airtight containers, layering them with parchment paper to keep the decorations intact. For longer-term storage, freeze the cookies before decorating.
