Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 block Firm tofu Use firm tofu, not silky.
  • 1/2 cup Sugar Plain granulated sugar works.
  • 1 cup Flour All-purpose or plain flour.
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch Helps keep the donuts light.
  • 2 tablespoons Melted butter or neutral oil
  • 1/2 cup Milk Dairy or non-dairy milk both work.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
Optional Flavorings
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Optional, for added flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Nutmeg Optional, for added flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon zest Optional, for added flavor.
Sugar Coating Variations
  • 1 cup Sugar For coating Tofu Donut Balls.

Method

Preparation
  1. Squeeze the tofu by wrapping it in a kitchen towel and gently pressing for 5-8 minutes to remove excess water.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the tofu with a fork or potato masher until smooth.
  3. Add sugar, vanilla, and melted butter to the bowl, mixing until creamy.
  4. Incorporate all dry ingredients: flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. Mix gently, adding milk if the dough feels too stiff.
Frying
  1. Scoop tablespoon-sized balls from the dough and roll them with your hands.
  2. Heat 1.5 inches of oil in a small pot, ensuring it’s hot (but not smoking), and fry the balls for 2-3 minutes each until golden brown.
  3. Drain the balls on paper towels and serve warm.

Notes

For best results, don’t overmix the dough. Adjust sugar levels if desired, and experiment with different coatings for added flavor.
